The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die speak to a universal experience: of home, of suburbia, of community, of nostalgia for a time not so long ago after all. Atmospheric and breathy, emotionally raw and heavy, The World Is’ reputation as one of today’s seminal “second-waver“ emo bands precedes them.
The World Is experience is a rich one. This is in part due to the varied history of the six people in the band, a Connecticut-bred lineup finalized as recently as 2011 despite their 2009 formation. Greg Horbal (also an agent with Hope This Helps Booking), Chris Teti (also an engineer at Connecticut’s Silver Bullet Studios) and Steven K. Buttery (also in the band Ferocious Fucking Teeth, runs a screenprinting operation of his own) were all formerly in a similarly significant Connecticut band, My Heart to Joy. Shanholtzer is a working visual artist, has operated a popular Connecticut house venue (The Handsome Woman) for years as well as contributed to bands like One Hundred Year Ocean, SOFX and
The band has three releases under their belt with the Topshelf family including their debut EP 7“ Formlessness, Josh Is Dead 7“ (also released as a cassette through Ice Age Records) and most recently a split with New Hampshire’s Deer Leap entitled ...Are Here to Help. Their highly anticipated full-length will released in the spring.

Today was an exciting one here at our office as it saw the unveiling of two very special, near and dear records and our first foray into putting out a book (even if it has 200 pages and probably less than 200 words, haha). The humbling feeling of validation when you see something you believe in getting such widespread praise and support is something I hope everyone gets to experience at some point or another, even if in just some simple small way. The response to these records going on sale today ? the culmination of years of planning, writing, setbacks, collaborating, personal sacrafice, etc. ? is just that. So I’m sure when I say thank you for your support I speak for Hilary, Evan, everyone here at Topshelf and everyone in The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, collectively.
So now, I am faced with the difficult decision of acknowledging that Whenever, If Ever is actively leaking a month before it’s release date. You can probably Google for it right now and get it.
This is arguably the biggest release we’ll have all year as a label and this spoils a lot of planning we had in place over the last few months, but these things happen. This also forces me to acknowledge the real-world truth that yes, records cost money. This oft-avoided subject in our community is a reality for everyone who tours or postpones real life to make music in nearly any capacity. It’s a thing. This record is no different.
So against my better judgement, we’ve made Whenever, If Ever available to:

I (Zack) stopped writing reviews for the site in the fall of 2011, and have had no true desire to start again; frankly, we have better people for that. I obviously do enjoy writing about music though, and have had the urge over the past few months to give my thoughts on albums once again: just not in typical review form.
