H A U N T E R & Eskimeaux // 2016 Cassette Subscription Series

Happy to announce the conclusion of our 2016 cassette subscription series with H A U N T E R’s STARTER / HAUNTER and Eskimeaux’s Year of the Rabbit!

For those unfamiliar, H A U N T E R (fka You Always Knew Me Last Week) is the sample-based electroacoustic music project of drummer/musician Sander Bryce (formerly of I Kill Giants). Fun fact: Sander was one of the first interns ever at Topshelf and we both had no idea what we were doing!

The release of this cassette consists of two separate EPs STARTER, which Bryce initially introduced via Bandcamp in September as “the ‘starter’ to a big meal” and HAUNTER which Bryce describes as:

Haunter is the pain and sorrow of the past, present, and future.
It is a tragedy of the human experience.
We are either the haunter, the haunted, or sometimes both.
Pain can be an endless cycle.
This is my attempt at ending the cycle and starting over.
I hope these songs are the only thing that will haunt the listener.
Enjoy...

Eskimeaux’s Gabby Smith has quickly become one of our favorite songwriters. Her 2015 LP O.K. was a monumental album of beat-driven and poetic bedroom pop that blissfully soars and swells on nearly every track.

Year of the Rabbit (originally released on CD, vinyl and digitally via Double Double Whammy earlier this year) is a collection of songs recorded live Smith and friends, Emily Sprague and Felix Walworth. The record is the first to showcase the sound of Eskimeaux's live band as its primary sonic touchstone, replacing the highly produced and overdubbed sound of Smith's earlier records with a more immediate, naturally produced sound.

Pre-orders for both releases are available now and you can now peruse both the entire monthly series and the artists that comprise it.

Thank you for listening!

Bellows // "Fist & Palm" On Cassette, Song Premieres on NPR and The Fader, Tour with PWR BTTM & Lisa Prank

I should preempt everything here in saying that, to date, Bellows' new album Fist & Palm is my favorite of this year. It's a fantastic record that takes me through the gamut of emotion. From grandiose soaring pop highs to introspective sullen lows, the album's eleven tracks are ambitious in scope, sonic palette and execution. Fist & Palm is at once familiar but constantly expanding ever slightly into new territory creating something fresh that — for me, personally — invokes the excitement I recall feeling when discovering K acts like Mirah or The Blow paired with the euphoria of M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. It's an exciting combination we're truly proud to be involved with in any capacity.

We'll be releasing Fist & Palm September 30, 2016 as part of our monthly cassette subscription series (Double Double Whammy are handling digital, vinyl & CD). You can pre-order an individual cassette copy of the album or pick up our entire subscription now.

NPR's All Songs Considered released "Thick Skin" earlier this summer saying at the heart of the song "is the message that one of the most freeing parts of life is the search for satisfaction, not the arrival of satisfaction itself" and that it has an "absolutely lovely, intimate quality." Yesterday The Fader shared album standout "Orange Juice".

Bellows are also embarking on a US tour with PWR BTTM and Lisa Prank this summer. All dates below.

Eerie Summer // "the way i don't understand anything anymore" Added to Our 2016 Cassette Series

Instantly hooked. That's the most concise way I can describe the immediacy in which Eerie Summer's the way i don't understand anything anymore struck me on first listen — heck, within 10 seconds of pressing play, ~if I'm being honest here~.

With a nod to the Sarah Records catalog, combined in equal parts with Camera Obscura, Yumi Zouma, Best Coast and mix in, say, a slightly more mid-tempo take on what more contemporary peers like Westkust are doing, and you'll start to have an idea of what the Helsinki, Finland duo are up to. What's truly hard to get a grasp of, though, is how every song they've crafted maintains a consistently catchy, warm and intimate pop sensibility from start to finish. Add to all of this the endorsements of a veritable holy trinity of esteemed music blogs and a clearer picture of a band (project?) perfectly comfortable with and in control of what they're doing emerges.

We're very happy to be releasing this album as the July release in our 2016 monthly cassette series. You can order a copy individually or as part of the entire series — thanks for listening!

Artie Tea // New Album, "Out of a Seaweed Dream"

Just over five years ago, we released An Evening With... — a raucous, high energy pop-filled gem of a 7″ EP for Boston’s The Clippers. Just like their songs, the band ended almost as abruptly as they started, leaving us and many others wanting more of singer Josh Croteau’s smooth vocal delivery and quirky guitar hooks.

Come the winter of 2015, Croteau began writing and recording a new selection of his pop-centric, and guitar driven samples. Pulling inspiration from late seaside nights and the hum-drum of days spent around the house, he emerged with eight sample tracks.

With encouraging words from friends, he decided to fully flesh out the songs with the help of Derek Desharnais (Sneeze, L’Antietam) in a shared practice space.

With Croteau on guitar/vocals and Desharnais on drums and bass, the two recorded their debut Out of a Seaweed Dream in early 2016, with the help of their friend Dan Coulson.

Out of a Seaweed Dream is the exciting result of two long-time friends collaborating to create manic hooks, chord-filled bridges and refreshing vocal melodies in the vein of The Cars, Bent Shapes, Dogs on Acid, The Replacements, The Toms or even The Gin Blossoms. The album is the sixth installment of our cassette series and is now in stock and shipping! You can listen to, download or order a physical copy of the album here:

Topshelf Records // 2016 Cassette Subscription Series

We've been asked a lot over the years about offering a label subscription of some kind (the answer is still no though lol) — and, while this doesn't address that specifically, we're very pleased to have put together something we think is just as exciting, if not more so! So we’re announcing a cassette subscription series today!! Weeee

Comprised of artists from around the world that we think deserve more attention, the series will focus on artists we are sincerely fans of that we feel are making new and exciting sounds that you should be listening to.

While the series is monthly, we do have quarterly and semiannually options as well if the shipping costs for a monthly plan are a bit too daunting for you. All cassettes are available individually in limited quantities as well. Shipments will also include stickers and buttons. Here is what we have planned (more info soon!):

PLEASE NOTE: this is currently for people residing in the US only. If you are from outside the United States please email us at orders [at] topshelfrecords [dot] com so we can help you out accordingly. Thanks for understanding!

Clique // New LP in 2016

Very psyched to welcome CLIQUE to our roster and announce that we'll be releasing a new LP from them early in 2016! The band got our attention last year in releasing their fantastic self-titled debut last year (which is currently available for pay-what-you-want download on bandcamp — or get it on vinyl from Broken World Media). Later this fall the band will return to The Headroom, the studio owned by Joe Reinhart (Algernon Cadwallader, Hop Along) and Kyle Pulley (Dangerous Ponies, Thin Lips) in November to record their TBA sophomore album.

CLIQUE joins Nai Harvest, Donovan Wolfington, Wildhoney, Infinity Girl, Solids, and Lizard Kisses on Thursday, October 15th for our CMJ Showcase at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn. The show is free, all ages, and is first-come, first-served. RSVP here.

Thanks!! ^_____^

Infinity Girl // Topshelf Records

It is with a great deal of excitement that we share with you the news that we'll be working with Brooklyn, NY's Infinity Girl in releasing their sophomore full length album Harm on August 28, 2015! Stereogum is currently premiering the album's first single, "Firehead", calling it a "a lush, emotive piece of work" (and we can only agree). Pre-orders for Harm are also now up.

We were first introduced to the band by way of a demo they sent us. It was the first time I can ever remember being sent an unsolicited demo that completely floored me. We wrote back almost immediately to inquire about hearing the rest of the album. The songs on Harm cover a lot of sonic ground over their 11-song traversal of pop, shoe gaze and punk, but as a whole, feel like one incredibly cohesive piece. We're very excited about this band and album.

Have a listen to the new single over on Stereogum and be sure to listen to their prior releases on bandcamp. If you like what you hear, you can pre-order the album now or give them a follow on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks!!
