Channeling the best of big, fuzzed out guitars of the 90s, Bay Area band Happy Diving have a knack for walloping, gut-punch riffs and sun-blasted sludgy rock. On their second and final full-length, Electric Soul Unity, the band strike a balance between crunchy indie rock and revivalist melodicism. Lead writer Matt Berry’s raw, hazy vocals lend a heart-on-sleeve sentimentality to the resounding walls of fuzz, calling on influences Dinosaur Jr. and Teenage Fanclub. Recorded live on the floor like its 2014 predecessor Big World, Happy Diving’s Electric Soul Unity has a palpable energy meant to be played extra loud, and felt in your core.
