Queen of Jeans // If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid

The sophomore record from Philly's Queen of Jeans is out everywhere today, and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you.

Listen to If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid today on your platform of choice.

A little less than two weeks before Queen of Jeans went into the studio to record, Miri’s mom passed away. Simultaneously, following the election in 2016, it was the first time as an adult that she ever really felt afraid to be herself in her own country. “I found myself in fear not only of losing my mom to her illness, but of losing my space within society as a queer woman, and watching space get taken away from so many others.”

If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid is a reaction to all of those emotions, stirred up from these events as Miri tried to navigate her relationships with her partner, friends and family without the guidance of her mom or a stable grip on what was and continues to happen in this country.

Despite all of it, though, Miri was able to open up on this record in a way that feels more like an act of bravery than anything else. Even the album’s first track and first-released single, “Get Lost,” finds the young songwriter owning the parts of her that might make her seem like a “square” or “boring” to others. The entire process was a significantly different experience for her, and it shows. If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid is an impactful collection of songs that stand for something real; Queen of Jeans’ invitation to the listener to embrace their own stories, no matter how scary it may seem.

mouse on the keys // "Mind"

Today we're thrilled to share “Mind,” the latest standalone composition from Japan’s prodigious jazz-meets-progressive-rock trio mouse on the keys. It opens in a swelling drone before exploding into jagged, disjointed syncopations overlapped with fervent, arpeggiating leads. Previously known for their dueling piano works that mash together modern jazz composition with neoclassical inflection, mouse on the keys have recently shown a fondness for synths, an effective textural addition to the already profound depth and elasticity of their unique sound. This subtle sonic shift is distinguished by the fuzzy, wailing synths that guide “Mind” to its boisterous climax, a cyber-kinetic eruption of urgency and suspense.

Queen of Jeans // "Only Obvious to You"

The latest single from Queen of Jeans, "Only Obvious to You," is out today on all streaming platforms. Taken from the band's upcoming album If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid, the new single blends Queen of Jeans’ signature softness with a rousing awakening of spirit. “This is a song about recognizing your value, and acknowledging when you’ve let someone take away your voice and dictate your worth,” explains Devora.

Listen to "Only Obvious to You" today on your preferred platform, or scope the music video below (heck, do both if you've got the time!)

The video was directed by Miri Devora, shot on an iPhone by guitarist Mattie Glass, edited by longtime collaborator Bob Sweeney, and filmed at Philadelphia Pride earlier this summer.

Mattie explains: “With the video, we wanted to showcase the LGBTQIAP+ community because that's our experience of love. It's not to say that our community experiences more or less of the pain of love - it's just that we experience the same amount as everyone else. A lot of times with the visibility in the media, you see these flowery commercials by corporations touting "love is love" and it's always a very one dimensional positive message. Like, “oh look at these cute happy gays - they’re just like us, laughing and eating cereal with their kids!” But we're so much more than that. As a queer person, I'm much more interested in seeing honest representation. We're human beings, and we have the same experiences that everyone else does.”

Album release shows:

  • September 5 - Washington, DC @ Songbyrd
  • September 6 - Philadelphia, PA @ Boot & Saddle
  • September 7 - Brooklyn, NY @ Goldsounds
  • September 8 - Boston, MA @ ONCE Ballroom

Field Mouse // Meaning

Ending an unplanned hiatus begun in 2016, the Brooklyn- and Philly-based Field Mouse have resurfaced to release their third full-length record, entitled Meaning. Slowly and painstakingly put together during politically tumultuous times, Meaning naturally came to be a record about "growing as a person despite the feeling of global entropy," as guitarist, vocalist, and lead writer Rachel Browne describes. But what exactly is the function of art in such a chaotic world? Over the course of Meaning's 11-song runtime, Field Mouse deftly posit their own answers to this tricky question, maneuvering between issues of growth, social media, insomnia, and forgiveness, the result of which is a nimbly composed dream pop record with infectious inflections of shoegaze and indie rock.

Listen to Meaning today on your preferred platform.

Remaining shows with Summer Cannibals:

  • August 16, 2019 - Brooklyn, NY @ Elsewhere
  • August 17, 2019 - Philadelphia, PA @ Boot & Saddle
  • August 18, 2019 - Washington, DC @ Comet Ping Pong

Fall Internship

We’re looking for a fall intern. If that interests you, please read on:

Our staff live in different cities spread all over the west coast so there is no central office Topshelf collectively operates from. Instead, we rely heavily on online communication tools and software. With that in mind, we are opening this opportunity up to anyone in the US, though applicants located in the Portland, OR area who can work directly with Kevin in our Northeast Portland home office are preferred.

Broadly speaking, the position will assist Topshelf staff with day-to-day needs while exposing you to the inner workings of running a record label—promoting, distributing, marketing and ultimately releasing music physically and digitally in a fun, fast paced, but also deliberate environment. We are a small team with limited resources and bandwidth, but we make a lot happen by playing to our collective strengths—this includes you. We’re looking for someone who can help with the more mundane aspects of running a label, sure (more on that below), but we’re also looking to highlight and showcase what you’re great at. Video editing, illustration, animation, web development, photography, graphic design, copywriting—whatever it is you’re excited about, we want to provide you with a platform to showcase your skillset while helping our roster grow and gaining experience and insight into how an independent record label operates.

Applicants should be familiar with and able to work within online communication tools and software like Dropbox, Slack, Wunderlist and G Suite. Familiarity with Adobe software like Illustrator and Photoshop is definitely a plus. Experience with e-commerce platforms like Bandcamp, Limited Run, Squarespace, Discogs, etc. is also a major plus but nbd if you have no idea what that means! It’s not required that you be a, uh, extremely “online” person, but some social media savvy is encouraged. Otherwise, we want to lean into what you’re excited about and provide an opportunity for you to showcase and grow your skillset(s). Lastly, please have more than just a cursory understanding of our roster and catalog.

  • The position pays $250.00/month.
  • we can accomodate college credit.
  • We are flexible on schedule and hours, but it is expected that you would be available at least 15 hours a week sometime between 10am and 5pm pst.
  • Though we will be opening this opportunity up for the duration of the fall semester (early September through mid-December), we are flexible on the internship’s total duration, start, and end times.

To apply, please send an email to: info at topshelfrecords dot com . Please be sure to include the word “INTERNSHIP” in the subject. Include your name, some artist(s) or album(s) on the label you enjoy, along with a little about yourself, what you do, and links to any relevant info (a portfolio, past projects, a social media profile, etc.).

Please no attachments other than a resume!!!!!

Thanks for your time and consideration.
