Field Mouse // Looking for joy in a frightening world on their new track, "In Blue"

Taken from the band's forthcoming record, Meaning, "In Blue" shows off Field Mouse's pop proclivities in a rolling dream-rock influenced number underpinned by warm, undulating synth, nostalgic chord progressions, and skittering tambourine. Led by Rachel Browne's distinct and direct singing style, "In Blue" invites us to focus our energy into that which brings us joy.

» Listen to "In Blue" by Field Mouse

Ending an unplanned hiatus begun in 2016, the Brooklyn- and Philly-based Field Mouse have resurfaced to release their third full-length record, entitled Meaning. Slowly and painstakingly put together during politically tumultuous times, Meaning naturally came to be a record about "growing as a person despite the feeling of global entropy," as guitarist, vocalist, and lead writer Rachel Browne describes. But what exactly is the function of art in such a chaotic world? Over the course of Meaning's 11-song runtime, Field Mouse deftly posits their own answers to this tricky question, maneuvering between issues of growth, social media, insomnia, and forgiveness, the result of which is a nimbly composed dream pop record with infectious inflections of shoegaze and indie rock.

Meaning, the third full-length album from Field Mouse, will be out via Topshelf Records on August 16, 2019. Pre-order the album today on vinyl, CD, or cassette.

Tour dates with Summer Cannibals:

  • August 15, 2019 - Boston, MA @ ONCE Ballroom
  • August 16, 2019 - Brooklyn, NY @ Elsewhere
  • August 17, 2019 - Philadelphia, PA @ Boot & Saddle
  • August 18, 2019 - Washington, DC @ Comet Ping Pong

Queen of Jeans // If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid Announced

The Philadelphia-based crockpot pop group have announced their forthcoming record, If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid, to be released on August 23, 2019. Check out the Bob Sweeney-directed video for the album's lead single, "Get Lost," below.

On If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid, Queen of Jeans paired with prominent producer Will Yip to enter into a new sonic era. It marks a decided turn to more tightly knit songwriting that emphasizes Queen of Jeans' most alluring strengths. Vocals shine through as the sun through clouds, drenching twangy, western-reminiscent guitar in evocative light, illuminating the album's vast and serene crockpot soundscapes. If you're not afraid, I'm not afraid is an impactful collection of songs that stand for something real; Queen of Jeans' invitation to the listener to embrace their own stories, no matter how scary it may seem.

Pre-order the album today on vinyl, CD, or cassette.

Field Mouse // Listen to "Heart of Gold" from the upcoming album Meaning

Today we're really excited to announce the upcoming release of Meaning, the third full length album by the Brooklyn- and Philly-based indie rock group Field Mouse, out this summer, August 16.

While listeners have previously described Field Mouse's sound as something akin to a shoegazey dream pop, Meaning marks a decided turn to less obscured realms, boasting 11 songs about finding meaning at the end of the world.

"A lot has happened in the three years since our last record came out. While there is far too much to say about it all in one place, we wrote this album anyway. What are the broad strokes, you ask? It's more or less about the end of the world and all of the ways that it seems to be happening, but also about making peace with former selves and growing as a person despite the feeling of global entropy. Also: strange internet versions of our friends and selves, bouts of insomnia and picking through the dreams that followed, the importance of forgiveness, and creating meaning in a world that increasingly feels like total chaos. What is the function of art in a place like this? Is anything we make going to last? I am not sure, but here are 11 songs looking for the answer. What I do know is that art connects us to each other and to our feelings and our selves. It is a liferaft, and I hope that we can all continue to put it into the world, appreciate it, and share it indefinitely.

Ahead of the album's release, we're sharing lead single "Heart of Gold" today on Bandcamp. Album pre-orders also launch today on both our Bandcamp and the Topshelf Records store.

"Heart of Gold" boasts all the makings of a quintessential guitar-pop hit, opening the record with determined bombast and urgency. It features guitarist and lead singer Rachel Browne's diaphanous vocals mirrored by feverish yet nimble guitar hooks, creating an organic, deftly layered rock composition.

Lead single "Heart of Gold" will be out worldwide on June 28. Pre-save the album today on Spotify or Apple Music.

Meaning tracklist:

  1. Meaning
  2. Heart of Gold
  3. In Blue
  4. Skygazing
  5. Black Hole, Son
  6. White Elephant
  7. Visitors
  8. Apocalypse Whenever
  9. Birthday Song
  10. Plague No. 8
  11. Blind Spot

Mid-Air Thief // Crumbling

We're thrilled to share the latest addition to the family with the signing of Mid-Air Thief and the reissue of their electronic-infused folk album, Crumbling. Already released everywhere digitally, pre-orders for vinyl, CD, and cassette launch today, and will ship on September 20, 2019.

♫ Listen to Crumbling today on your preferred platform.

Although sung almost entirely in Korean, Mid-Air Thief's cult-acclaimed album Crumbling, exhibits a distinct universality, merging disparate sounds and styles into a cohesive, electronic-infused folk amalgam that tactfully blurs the lines between organic and synthetic. Listeners are led through enrapturing passages of swirling melodies underscored with eloquent plucks, strums, and bursts of bubbly glitches. Individual phrases drift into one another as if in a dream, cohered by guest vocalist Summer Soul's entrancing hooks and vocal soundscapes. Crumbling is a compelling accomplishment of both composition and production, bending as it does to its unique contours of consonance and dissonance, always resolving to a place of calm and beauty.

Alfred. // Like You!! Released

Topshelf Records is excited to share the latest addition to the family with the release of Alfred.'s Like You!!, out today in collaboration with Citrus City Records.

♫ Listen to Like You!! today on your preferred platform.

Like You!! is the deeply multifaceted debut album by Richmond, VA's Alfred. Its warbly bell tones, expertly chopped melodic samples, and slow-mo hip-hop grooves form the instrumental base for the "darkgospel" singer/rapper Aaron Brown.

While Like You!! only clocks in at eight total tracks, its various producers and guest collaborators lend a striking sonic diversity to the overall work. Jazzy yet supple Dilla-reminiscent cuts such as "Tales of a Queer Rapscallion" contrast starkly with those like "GAMES," where Alfred.'s signature darkgospel stylings shine through most expressly. The record's wide spectrum is further emboldened by the substance of Brown's lyricism and personal convictions, taking cues from their genuine curiosity with the world around them, and blending that with their grief, hurt, hopes, and joys.

Ultimately, Alfred. strives to maintain their fondness of personal connection, symbolized in their favorite line of the album, taken from the song "Like You! (Yes, You)": "My hobby is functioning with my posse and I know that I get weird and loud but somewhere deep, deep down I was just tryna be like you."

"I wrote this for everyone and anyone that I've ever got to love, hold and admire from a far. For people who misperceive and for those I misperceive, for the honor of my family and wound in my sides that are my blood ties. I send love to all of you in some tiny way every time I rhyme. Lovers, friends, teacher, haters, strangers, acquaintances, enemies, oppressors all alike some way some how I'm thinking about you. I want peace and do not know how to attain it for even myself, and some days all I have is my song. Dramatic and long winded but I mean it."

LITE // Multiple: Sixth Studio Album Released

Multiple, out today, is the sixth full length record by the prolific maximalists known as LITE. Over the past 16 years, the Japanese quartet has established itself as one of the most influential groups across a host of subgenres. Though usually referred to by touchstones such as "math-rock" or "post-rock," LITE has developed an uncanny ability to fuse their influences into their own unmistakable dialect that defies generic genre classification.

♫ Listen to Multiple today on your preferred platform.

At times, Multiple’s compositions can place listeners at the junction of unlikely stylistic intersections. Conversating funk riffs will interweave with challenging rhythmic phrasing, blurring the lines between lead sections, obscuring where passages begin and end. LITE's distinct voice is emphasized in tracks such as "Double" and "4mg Warmth," where melodies meander incessantly, constantly taking the listener to new territory.

While many LITE songs unfold at breakneck pace, others entertain entirely different worlds altogether. In songs "Ring" and "Blizzard," the band tests the limits of their abilities with slowed-down, genre-bending forays into hip-hop and dub. On "Ring," LITE collaborated with rapper Maco Marets and singer Utena Kobayashi, where the latter's talents were also tapped for the song's ethereal steelpan section. As LITE has shown over nearly two decades, there exists no style that they cannot master or otherwise weave into their designs.

Multiple is now out digitally on Topshelf Records. Pre-order physicals today via the Topshelf Records store, to be released on September 6, 2019.
