Doe // Welcome to the Roster!

We are so excited to announce that we will be releasing Doe's upcoming record, Grow into It on September 28th, in tandem with our friends at Big Scary Monsters! If this band isn't on your radar already, take some time to get acquainted with the energetic, UK-based trio whose music will transport you to your happy place. In yesterday's DIY Mag premiere of the first single "Heated", guitarist and singer Nicola Leel commented on the album's themes, and how it's centered around "the aging process and growth." Watch Doe's vibrant music video for the track, and grab a download anywhere you get your music -

Boys Life // Topshelf Records

Back in 1996, Seth and I were in middle school. While, completely unbeknownst to us, one of our favorite records of all time was being recorded. Nearly twenty years later, and here we are re-releasing Boys Life's seminal Departures and Landfalls. Taking cues from greats like Drive Like Jehu and Fugazi, melding that with the sounds of a flourishing midwest scene and incorporating their own take on things to arrive at a truly unique and defining sound, the band wrote what is now considered to be a landmark album for a genre that Seth and I care dearly about.

Being released August 14, 2015, the re-issue's packaging will feature a double LP, gatefold jacket with spot gloss and slightly updated artwork — with two vinyl colors to choose from. You can sign up to be notified when pre-orders go up now.

The band will also be playing a reunion show of sorts with fellow Kansas City band Giants ChairDetails for that are here with more shows to be announced at a later date.

The Jazz June // New album this year

We hinted at this earlier, but today we're making it official: influential Philly indie/emo outfit The Jazz June will be recording a new full length LP at Gradwell House in New Jersey with Into It. Over It.'s Evan Weiss producing. The record will be released later this year through us.

The Jazz June will also be playing an intimate show in Philadelphia on April 12 with special guests Into It. Over It. (solo) and HeartwellWashed Up Emo will host the festivities. Tickets for the show can be purchased from Boot & Saddle and Ticketfly.

The band is also releasing a split 7" with Dikembe in May via Tiny Engines and ourselves. Pre-orders for the 7" will launch in April. The band's contribution to the split marks their first official recorded material since their last full-length, 2002's Better Off Without Air.

In a recent Noisey feature titled "The Possibilities Are Endless:An Oral History of The Jazz June", writer Paul Blest sites the band as one of the, "benchmarks of emo", along with their contemporaries such as Cap'n Jazz and Braid.

Wild Ones // Topshelf Records

Today we're thrilled to finally announce that we'll be working with Portland, OR's Wild Ones. The band originally caught our attention last summer from something as simple as a tweet on Duck. Little Brother, Duck!'s Twitter timeline. The internet, you guys. We gave them a listen and were instantly hooked (including them on our 2013 sampler shortly thereafter).

The band has a lush, fully developed and well-rounded sound that is incredibly infectious. When listening to Keep It Safe, the band's debut LP, I am a smarter, sexier person for those 48:46. The record flows effortlessly from start to finish, pulling and tugging, lifting and sinking along the way — in all the right ways at all the right times. SPIN seems to agree:

"The melodic grace of singer Danielle Sullivan is undeniable, while the band's mix of buoyant synth-pop and familiar indie-rock keeps things moving ever forward."

Time Magazine also hailed Wild Ones as a Band to Watch in 2014, saying of the album:

"Keep It Safe is filled with impeccable arrangements and a mature pop sensibility that hits you from the first note. The songs are anchored by Danielle Sullivan’s distinct voice, which brings to mind both The Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan and Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays. Her mesmerizing vocal melodies work well with the inventive synthesizer compositions of Thomas Himes — fused with supple guitar and bass work you get a grandiose and melancholy pop sound that is both novel and retro, innovative and comfortable."

We'll be releasing Keep It Safe on April 1 of this year (no foolsies). We'll have pre-order and packaging details coming soon but you can sign up to be notified as soon as we make them available.

Wild Ones will embark on a spring tour in March, combining headlining dates alongside a supporting spot with Typhoon. Donovan Wolfington // Topshelf Records

Leading up to our SXSW showcase last year I had a slew of emails from friends asking if there was any room for a band to play our show (there 100% wasn't, at all). I listened and liked it and caved and decided to squeeze them on the bill opening the show. That band was New Orleans' Donovan Wolfington. They were awesome and by far the nicest, most courteous people I'd come across in awhile. That day stuck with us and when we heard their new material it was a no-brainer to try and work together on releasing it.

So today we're excited to announce that we'll be releasing a new EP from the band, Scary Stories You Tell In the Dark, later this spring. Noisey has the premiere of their new track "Keef Ripper" today, saying:

"fuck[ed] us up. In a good way. It’s a scattered mix of about a dozen genres rolled into one. Some parts party punk, other parts post-hardcore, even a little 90s alterna-rock and grunge mixed in. We dug it."

Donovan Wolfington will also be doing a short tour with Pope and Dowsing on the way back from SXSW. Dates and info for that are below:

Frameworks // Topshelf Records

When it comes to discovering new music, I'll take a recommendation from a trusted friend over any taste-making "this music is for sampling only" every. single. time. So when I started to have a few friends telling me to check out Gainesville, FL's Frameworks, I had high expectations. Upon listening, those expectations were immediately blown apart and exceeded tenfold. I'm pretty sure I was searching for their email address to get in touch within a few minutes of my first listen. They're that good. We asked them to play our SXSW showcases soon after and were floored by how well everything translated live (not to mention they were really nice guys — everything feels natural, and nothing about them seems forced). We're thrilled to announce we'll be working with them to release new music in 2014.

If you're already a fan of bands on our current roster like Pianos Become the Teeth, We Were Skeletons, Caravels or even The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, it's not a stretch to imagine that you're really going to enjoy Frameworks' music — or perhaps you already do.

My first experience was with their fantastic Small Victories EP which came out earlier in 2013 via 13th Floor Records. It's just four songs. It leaves you wanting more. It's a perfect EP. Start at track one — because there isn't a bad track — but pay particular attention to the seamless transitioning between standout tracks three and four (that's perhaps where I fell in love with Frameworks).

The band just recently premiered a new song entitled "Preamble" which Pitchfork described as "lounge screamo". So there's that, I guess. You can pre-order the split, which also features Prawn, Kittyhawk and Droughts on November 3, 2013 through Fair Weather Records.

Frameworks are set to hit the studio with producer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven's Sunbather) in the new year and we'll have more details on what that results in soon. For now, check them out on Facebook, Instagram or their website.

Their / They're / There // Analog Weekend

Over the years, Chicago has been an incubator for some of our favorite bands and albums. Polyvinyl Records is and always has been a huge part of that. Matt Frank, Evan Weiss & Mike Kinsella are a huge part of that, individually — and now are collaboratively as well with Their / They're / There. So today we're really some kind of excited to announce that we're co-releasing the band's new EP entitled Analog Weekend with Polyvinyl on December 10, 2013.

There's been a lot of talk lately about an, ahem, "emo revival". I won't touch on that right now. Instead, I'd like to make light of something far, far more exciting to me: the acknowledgement and willful collaboration between new and established acts alike within this niche. I'm seeing more and more of this and these guys are the standard-bearer for it — with stellar results.

The aforementioned stellar results were recorded directly to tape at Ed Rose’s Black Lodge Recording over a single weekend and feature piano by James Dewees (The Get Up Kids, Reggie and the Full Effect, Coalesce). You can hear "New Blood", a new track from the record, right now over on Pitchfork.

The band will also be briefly hitting the road in support of the album. Dates and info are below:

  • Dec 15 - Chicago, IL (EP Release Show) @ Schuba's *
  • Dec 18 - Boston, MA @ Great Scott *
  • Dec 19 - Brooklyn, NY @ Knitting Factory ^
  • Dec 20 - Philadelphia, PA @ First Unitarian Church ^
  • Dec 21 - Hamden, CT @ The Space ^

* w/ Mansions
^ w/ Mansions, Birthmark

Analog Weekend is now available for pre-order through us and Polyvinyl.

Thanks everyone!

Braid // Topshelf Records

First off: I can't believe that's a headline I just typed. We are beyond thrilled to announce that we'll be working with seminal ‘90s emo indie-rock quartet Braid to release their upcoming full-length album. Set for a 2014 release, the new album will be the band’s first in 16 years and will follow their recent 2012 front-to-back Frame & Canvas tour.

I first heard about this band from a cassette mix tape my friend Greg made for a girl at his church camp over a decade ago. He somehow never managed to give her the tape so he gave it to me instead. My old '94 Dodge Ram van's cassette player long ago ate up that tape, but the band has been a mainstay for both Seth and I ever since. We. Love. This. Band.

"We're fans of all of the bands on Topshelf's roster and love the spirit with which Seth and Kevin run the label. It feels great to be a part of such an energetic and youthful movement – one that is happening right now."

-Bob Nanna

In addition to the new album, Braid will also be headlining our CMJ showcase on October 19, 2013 with The Jazz June, EnemiesCaravels and Have Mercy. Tickets are on sale for that now.

More information on the band’s forthcoming album will be detailed soon. In the mean time, you can follow them on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr & Twitter and also catch them on the following upcoming dates:

Crash of Rhinos // Topshelf Records

Ever since first hearing Distal in 2011 we've been hooked on Crash of Rhinos. The Derby, UK natives have written a record — entitled Knots — that is exactly what I want to listen to. So when we were asked to get involved with releasing it, it was kind of a no-brainer. Sonically, it fits perfectly with our catalog and if you're typically a fan of records we put out, you're gonna like this.

We'll be pairing up with Big Scary Monsters in the UK and To Lose La Track in Italy to bring this to y'all. Expect a late summer release. We'll have pre-order details and an exact release date soon!

Have a listen to a new song, "Opener", from their forthcoming full length right below and give 'em a follow on Twitter and Facebook.
