Cancelled Tours // 100% of Bandcamp Sales Going to Artists
Are you disappointed to see all the shows you were looking forward to in the next couple of months cancelled? We are too! (so are our artists) - in light of 250+ cancellations disrupting so much in our roster's lives we've routed 100% of Bandcamp sales directly to the artist through this weekend.
If you were planning on seeing any of the following bands in the next few weeks, please consider buying their album instead. If you've got expendable income right now, a little goes a long way (◠‿◠✿)
We're extremely excited to share that the band standards have signed with Topshelf Records and will release their debut full-length, Fruit Island, this summer.
standards is a two-piece math rock band fronted by guitarist Marcos Mena and featuring drummer Brody Taylor Smith. Their self-described "fruity" melodies and technical musicianship have earned them somewhat of a cult following over the years, owed in part to Mena's proclivity for guitar-based video content. But the band's ebullient songwriting is the true source of their popularity among guitar-music fans, who laud standards for their uniquely danceable brand of complex instrumental rock. Since the group's inception in late 2017, standards have released two beloved EPs, played with the likes of Polyphia, Covet, and Delta Sleep, and toured in support of emo group Tiny Moving Parts.
addy // Debut album 'Eclipse' announced with the uplifting lead "Planted"
Yesterday we shared the news of yet another addition to the Topshelf roster in Richmond VA's addy. Led by Adam Watkins, addy dabbles in contemplative bedroom musings of friendship, heartbreak, and growth, brought to life through songs that are equally familiar and refreshing.
addy's first action as a newly minted Topshelf artist is the unveiling of the uplifting lead single, "Planted," taken from their debut full length, Eclipse, to be released on March 6, 2020.
We're not sharing new music from Crisman quite just yet (stay tuned for that)! But in the meantime we encourage you to check out their previous work on Spotify and Bandcamp (where all previous work is currently available for free download).
On Goose Bumps, Connecticut's Boyscott present ten upbeat tracks that forge together elements of surf rock and bedroom pop. Weaving the supple sounds of yore into the techniques of today, Boyscott's distinct bedroom-recorded bops betray the limitations of their modest studio situation with a sonic depth not commonly associated with lo-fi projects.
Originally released in 2015, Goose Bumps is getting its first vinyl pressing with a co-release by Topshelf Records and Babe City Records. Although it took a few years of rotating casts, various makeshift studio experiences, and over a hundred shows, Boyscott have clearly carved out their own place in the world, garnering millions of streams and selling out many DIY physical pressings in the process. Read below for tour dates, and enjoy the record!

We're thrilled to share the latest addition to the family with the signing of Mid-Air Thief and the reissue of their electronic-infused folk album, Crumbling. Already released everywhere digitally, pre-orders for vinyl, CD, and cassette launch today, and will ship on September 20, 2019.
Although sung almost entirely in Korean, Mid-Air Thief's cult-acclaimed album Crumbling, exhibits a distinct universality, merging disparate sounds and styles into a cohesive, electronic-infused folk amalgam that tactfully blurs the lines between organic and synthetic. Listeners are led through enrapturing passages of swirling melodies underscored with eloquent plucks, strums, and bursts of bubbly glitches. Individual phrases drift into one another as if in a dream, cohered by guest vocalist Summer Soul's entrancing hooks and vocal soundscapes. Crumbling is a compelling accomplishment of both composition and production, bending as it does to its unique contours of consonance and dissonance, always resolving to a place of calm and beauty.
Today we're excited to reveal the latest addition to the Topshelf family with the announcement of Alfred.'s Like You!!, to be released in collaboration with Citrus City Records on June 7, 2019. The record will be released with a special zine designed by the artist. Enjoy the album in full today, alongside the two-part music video for "Tales of a Queer Rapscallion" and "Like You! (Yes, You)."
Like You!! is the deeply multifaceted debut album by Richmond, VA's Alfred. Its warbly bell tones, expertly chopped melodic samples, and slow-mo hip-hop grooves form the instrumental base for the "darkgospel" singer/rapper Aaron Brown.
While Like You!! only clocks in at eight total tracks, its various producers and guest collaborators lend a striking sonic diversity to the overall work. Jazzy yet supple Dilla-reminiscent cuts such as "Tales of a Queer Rapscallion" contrast starkly with those like "GAMES," where Alfred.'s signature darkgospel stylings shine through most expressly. The record's wide spectrum is further emboldened by the substance of Brown's lyricism and personal convictions, taking cues from their genuine curiosity with the world around them, and blending that with their grief, hurt, hopes, and joys.
Ultimately, Alfred. strives to maintain their fondness of personal connection, symbolized in their favorite line of the album, taken from the song "Like You! (Yes, You)": "My hobby is functioning with my posse and I know that I get weird and loud but somewhere deep, deep down I was just tryna be like you."
Alfred. will also go on a short tour this summer with Citrus City Records labelmate Shormey ( * )
Of the two videos, Oliver Kalb (lead force behind Bellows) explains that, "'Denouement' and 'What Can I Tell You About The World?' are the two center-piece songs of the album — I think of them as representing two opposing emotions the album deals with. The first is a bitter, angry song, obsessed with the past and the misdeeds of others. The other is a song about peace, and about trying to live life without passing judgment on everything you see. They’re a duo because neither tells a full story: the world is neither as messed up as it is in 'Denouement' nor as simple and problem-free as 'What Can I Tell You About The World?' but together they form a worldview: feeling out the anger it takes to acknowledge when you’ve hurt, but not allowing it to overwhelm your ability to find happiness where it comes."

Topshelf Records is happy to welcome Another Michael to the roster with the release of their new EP, Land. The four track EP incorporates a wealth of stylistic touchstones that produce a thoughtful amalgam of indie pop carried by crispy, subdued electronic percussion. The eponymous Michael Doherty nimbly lavishes and bolsters each song with an angelic, agile vocal style, occasionally harking back to early 2000s R&B. But the group’s crafty instrumentation and production sit center stage too, consistently driven by a diverse sound palette that flashes with a distinct compositional elegance.
Check out the EP on your preferred platform, here.
Land was produced by Nick Sebastiano, Scoops Dardaris, and Michael Doherty.
We are so excited to announce that we will be releasing Doe's upcoming record, Grow into It on September 28th, in tandem with our friends at Big Scary Monsters! If this band isn't on your radar already, take some time to get acquainted with the energetic, UK-based trio whose music will transport you to your happy place. In yesterday's DIY Mag premiere of the first single "Heated", guitarist and singer Nicola Leel commented on the album's themes, and how it's centered around "the aging process and growth."
