Pong

We're excited to announce the newest addition to our roster: Harry the Nightgown

At the age of five, Sami Perez was lonely enough to befriend a tree that sat catty-corner to San Francisco’s Alamo Square Park and directly below her bedroom window. Due to its ever growing ivy, she named the tree “Harry the Nightgown”.

In 2014, Perez met Spencer Hartling at a dive bar in Ventura when their respective bands played to a small audience of balding drunks. Impressed with each others’ performances, they forged a long distance friendship and began to collaborate on their music. In 2017, Hartling moved from Los Angeles to a farm on an off-grid plot of land in the mountains of Guerneville. Hartling set up a minimal recording space in a shipping container, and it was there, against the farm’s backdrop of manzanita trees and natural springs that Perez and Hartling began writing and demoing what would eventually become Harry the Nightgown.

In late 2018, Hartling and Perez began to record their debut self-titled album, Harry the Nightgown at Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco. The album is a showcase of their experimental engineering and production styles, as well as their shared love of playful sonic deconstruction. The songs are a meditation on the struggle of continuing a creative collaboration with an ex-partner.

"We were nervous picking a first single, because it’s our introduction to the world as Harry the Nightgown. We’re so excited to share Ping Pong because it is a pretty raw exhibition of what we are. This song sat for a while as just a repetitive guitar part over a drum machine. It took us some time, but the song eventually grew into a representation of our ability to collaborate, which, as ex-partners committing to a merged creative outlet, is a painful yet fruitful process."

The self-titled debut album from Harry the Nightgown arrives August 7th ~ cassette pre-orders coming soon.

Gregory Uhlmann // Lead Single "Spice Girls"

Gregory Uhlmann has premiered the first single from his forthcoming second record, Neighborhood Watch, which we will be releasing July 24. "Spice Girls" premiered with Atwood Magazine, accompanied by a thoughtful write-up and interview. You can stream the single on your platform of choice :~)

The singer-songwriter and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann, a member of Perfume Genius, Fell Runner and the genre-bending improvising trio Typical Sisters, has in the past found loveliness in dark places. His acclaimed solo album of 2016, Odd Job, blended “lush, hypnotic, minimalist chamber-pop with compelling, introspective folk melancholy,” per the Big Takeover.

For Uhlmann, Odd Job came from a place of yearning and longing—an expression of a young songwriter looking back, often in sadness or regret or angst. But his new project, Neighborhood Watch, while also rich in melodic and textural allure, comes from a place of contentment. Consider it a meditation on domestic bliss experienced in early adulthood, an expression of the sweetness, good humor and fond reflections Uhlmann is compelled toward at this happy place in his life.

Neighborhood Watch is a cozy portrait of grains of sand, cats, ants, getting colds, letting loose, feeling shy, watching movies, and being in love,” the songwriter says.

"Rising and falling in heavy waves of lush overdrive & hypnotizing vocals, Gregory Uhlmann’s “Spice Girls” introduces his forthcoming second album ‘Neighborhood Watch’ with a raw, impassioned outpouring."

-Atwood Magazine

Neighborhood Watch is available to pre-order from our website and through Uhlmann's Bandcamp on digital, cassette, and three vinyl variants:

  • Light & Dark Brown "Wood" (limited to 100)
  • 180g Black (limited to 150)

standards // Signing and album announce

We're extremely excited to share that the band standards have signed with Topshelf Records and will release their debut full-length, Fruit Island, this summer.

standards is a two-piece math rock band fronted by guitarist Marcos Mena and featuring drummer Brody Taylor Smith. Their self-described "fruity" melodies and technical musicianship have earned them somewhat of a cult following over the years, owed in part to Mena's proclivity for guitar-based video content. But the band's ebullient songwriting is the true source of their popularity among guitar-music fans, who laud standards for their uniquely danceable brand of complex instrumental rock. Since the group's inception in late 2017, standards have released two beloved EPs, played with the likes of Polyphia, Covet, and Delta Sleep, and toured in support of emo group Tiny Moving Parts.

Boyscott // Goose Bumps

We're elated to announce that Topshelf Records has teamed up with Babe City Records to jointly reissue Boyscott's widely loved surf-pop debut, Goose Bumps.

Listen to Goose Bumps on your platform of choice
Pre-order the album on vinyl, CD, or cassette (*ships October 25, 2019*)

On Goose Bumps, Connecticut's Boyscott present ten upbeat tracks that forge together elements of surf rock and bedroom pop. Weaving the supple sounds of yore into the techniques of today, Boyscott's distinct bedroom-recorded bops betray the limitations of their modest studio situation with a sonic depth not commonly associated with lo-fi projects.

Originally released in 2015, Goose Bumps is getting its first vinyl pressing with a co-release by Topshelf Records and Babe City Records. Although it took a few years of rotating casts, various makeshift studio experiences, and over a hundred shows, Boyscott have clearly carved out their own place in the world, garnering millions of streams and selling out many DIY physical pressings in the process. Read below for tour dates, and enjoy the record!

Mid-Air Thief // Crumbling

We're thrilled to share the latest addition to the family with the signing of Mid-Air Thief and the reissue of their electronic-infused folk album, Crumbling. Already released everywhere digitally, pre-orders for vinyl, CD, and cassette launch today, and will ship on September 20, 2019.

♫ Listen to Crumbling today on your preferred platform.

Although sung almost entirely in Korean, Mid-Air Thief's cult-acclaimed album Crumbling, exhibits a distinct universality, merging disparate sounds and styles into a cohesive, electronic-infused folk amalgam that tactfully blurs the lines between organic and synthetic. Listeners are led through enrapturing passages of swirling melodies underscored with eloquent plucks, strums, and bursts of bubbly glitches. Individual phrases drift into one another as if in a dream, cohered by guest vocalist Summer Soul's entrancing hooks and vocal soundscapes. Crumbling is a compelling accomplishment of both composition and production, bending as it does to its unique contours of consonance and dissonance, always resolving to a place of calm and beauty.

Alfred. // Like You!!

Today we're excited to reveal the latest addition to the Topshelf family with the announcement of Alfred.'s Like You!!, to be released in collaboration with Citrus City Records on June 7, 2019. The record will be released with a special zine designed by the artist. Enjoy the album in full today, alongside the two-part music video for "Tales of a Queer Rapscallion" and "Like You! (Yes, You)."

Like You!! is the deeply multifaceted debut album by Richmond, VA's Alfred. Its warbly bell tones, expertly chopped melodic samples, and slow-mo hip-hop grooves form the instrumental base for the "darkgospel" singer/rapper Aaron Brown.

While Like You!! only clocks in at eight total tracks, its various producers and guest collaborators lend a striking sonic diversity to the overall work. Jazzy yet supple Dilla-reminiscent cuts such as "Tales of a Queer Rapscallion" contrast starkly with those like "GAMES," where Alfred.'s signature darkgospel stylings shine through most expressly. The record's wide spectrum is further emboldened by the substance of Brown's lyricism and personal convictions, taking cues from their genuine curiosity with the world around them, and blending that with their grief, hurt, hopes, and joys.

Ultimately, Alfred. strives to maintain their fondness of personal connection, symbolized in their favorite line of the album, taken from the song "Like You! (Yes, You)": "My hobby is functioning with my posse and I know that I get weird and loud but somewhere deep, deep down I was just tryna be like you."

Alfred. will also go on a short tour this summer with Citrus City Records labelmate Shormey ( * )

Bellows // Album Announce: The Rose Gardener

Today we are proud to share the first two singles from the upcoming record The Rose Gardener by the Brooklyn-based group Bellows, to be released on Topshelf Records on February 22, 2019.

Catch the two music videos premiering today at Stereogum alongside a US tour announcement. As well, don't miss pre-orders for The Rose Gardener, which are now live on our webstore.

Of the two videos, Oliver Kalb (lead force behind Bellows) explains that, "'Denouement' and 'What Can I Tell You About The World?' are the two center-piece songs of the album — I think of them as representing two opposing emotions the album deals with. The first is a bitter, angry song, obsessed with the past and the misdeeds of others. The other is a song about peace, and about trying to live life without passing judgment on everything you see. They’re a duo because neither tells a full story: the world is neither as messed up as it is in 'Denouement' nor as simple and problem-free as 'What Can I Tell You About The World?' but together they form a worldview: feeling out the anger it takes to acknowledge when you’ve hurt, but not allowing it to overwhelm your ability to find happiness where it comes."

Tour Dates:

  • 3/2 - Kingston, NY @ BSP
  • 3/3 - Boston, MA @ O’Brien’s #
